Long-Term Unwanted Hair Reduction for Dover, New Philadelphia, Akron, & Canton, Ohio Patients
At Fine Arts Skin & Laser Facial Plastic Surgery, we believe the Nordlys Hybrid is the world’s best device for laser hair removal. Ohio-area patients, including those from Canton, Akron, Dover, and New Philadelphia, have access to a tried, tested, and true system at our practice that is FDA-cleared for permanent hair reduction. Nordlys Hybrid IPL (Intense Pulsed Light, or photorejuvenation) treatments are also a great way for patients to rejuvenate and improve the tone and quality of their skin.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Selective absorption of light-based energy from the Nordlys Hybrid device destroys targeted hair follicles while sparing other skin components. The energy-absorbing target in permanent laser hair removal is the melanin pigment of the hair shaft in the hair root (hair follicle). Because the concentration of melanin is less in lighter skin, and because the concentration of melanin is greater in hair that is darker, the best candidates for laser hair removal are individuals with lighter skin and darker hair.
The Nordlys IPL system is safe for use on nearly any area of the body on patients with Fitzpatrick skin types 1 to 3: i.e., very fair skin to olive skin. Our medical team can help you determine your skin type if you are unsure. The darker and thicker than the hair follicle is, the more likely it is to be permanently destroyed in the first treatment. With all laser and light-based hair-removal devices, lighter-colored hair and finer hair do not make good targets for removal. Therefore, we do not recommend this treatment for very fine or light-colored hair.
Why Do We Use Nordlys Hybrid for Laser Hair Removal?
Hand-made in Denmark with extremely smart software to be maximally effective with minimal collateral injury to other skin structures, our Nordlys system leaves our patients with the best possible results, in minimal discomfort and maximal safety. Company studies demonstrate nearly 90% persistence of hair removal, even at more than 13 years after treatment in fully treated areas! As this treatment best targets the darker and coarser hair follicles, any hair that manages to persist will be the lighter, finer hair follicles (vellus hairs) that grow far more slowly and are the least noticeable or troublesome. Most commonly, patients report that after Nordlys Hybrid laser hair removal treatments, they are no longer shaving daily, but rather only twice a month or so, if that.
How Many Treatment Sessions Are Required?
Hair follicles must be in the “growth phase” of their life cycle at the time of treatment to be permanently destroyed. Roughly 70% of hair follicles at a given time will be in the growth phase. The other 30% will be in a resting or dormant phase and will not be vulnerable to be destroyed until the subsequent treatments several weeks later. To destroy as many follicles as possible, we recommend multiple (3-4) treatment sessions at spaced-out intervals.
With Nordlys Hybrid, on appropriate hair – darker hair on lighter skin – we can expect a 50-70% reduction of underarm, upper lip, chin, or bikini area hair following a single treatment. We generally recommend a four-treatment package to achieve roughly 90% of permanent hair removal. These results vary depending on individual patient factors.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Some patients describe the sensation of the intense light pulse as a rubber band quickly snapping the skin. We routinely use a numbing cream called NumbMaster, as well as our Zimmer, forced cool/cold air device to make laser hair removal treatments very comfortable.
Treatment of the underarms with NumbMaster and cool air treatment, for instance, results in almost no discomfort for most patients.
Certain body areas with more delicate skin (such as the upper lip, certain sections of the bikini area, or around the areola) are more sensitive, and generally more discomfort is experienced in those areas. However, it is still very tolerable with appropriate pre-treatment measures with our device.
Pain Management You Control
By offering PRO-NOX™, Dr. David Hartman puts pain and anxiety management into his patients’ own hands. While every procedure and treatment is designed to be as comfortable as possible, administered with care and an eye for beautiful results, the reality is that injections and incisions can make some people nervous—and they also generally require some sort of anesthetic.
PRO-NOX™ makes use of a carefully calibrated gas, made up of 50 percent oxygen and 50 percent nitrous oxide, which is the ratio long used to help women in labor with their own pain, discomfort, and situational anxiety. Fine Arts Skin and Laser patients can begin inhaling the mixture at their own convenience, and it begins working within seconds. Once the surgical or non-surgical cosmetic treatment is completed and the system is no longer in use, the gas quickly leaves the body, leaving patients free to handle their own drive home or wherever life next takes them.
