What is Otoplasty?
Are you uncomfortable with the size, shape, or overall appearance of your ears? There’s a simple surgical method that can correct these issues and improve your confidence — otoplasty. Otoplasty is a type of surgery used to improve the shape, proportion, or position of one or both ears. It can be used to correct both defects that have been present since birth and those caused by an injury. Because issues with ear appearance affect people of all ages, this procedure can be performed on children (age five and older), teenagers, and adults. At Fine Arts Skin & Laser, Dr. David Hartman and his experienced staff provide otoplasty surgery for patients of all ages at our facility in Dover, OH.
Otoplasty can help address a wide variety of issues related to the aesthetics of a patient's ears, including:
-
Large ears
-
Protruding ears
-
Mistakes from previous ear surgeries
-
Other ear deformities and abnormalities

Am I a Candidate for Otoplasty?
Nearly anyone five years old and older, who is interested in improving the shape, position, or proportion of their ears, is a potential candidate for an otoplasty procedure. Patients must be healthy non-smokers without any ear infections to be considered. If you are thinking about having your child undergo an otoplasty procedure, it’s important that they follow both pre-and post-procedure care directions.
Before you or someone you love undergoes an otoplasty procedure, you will first schedule a consultation with Dr. Hartman. During this appointment, he will examine your ears, discuss your surgical options, and help you decide if this procedure is a good choice to achieve your aesthetic goals.
How Is Otoplasty performed?
Otoplasty is a fairly simple plastic surgery that is performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home after your surgery is finished. Depending on your case specifics and the complexity of the procedure, otoplasty may be performed under local anesthesia where you are awake with the treatment area numbed or under general anesthesia where you will be asleep during the entire surgery. Most otoplasty procedures take about 1 – 3 hours. During an otoplasty, Dr. Harman makes an incision, either inside the folds of your ear or on the back of the ear to help hide any possible scars. Then, depending on your needs, he will either remove cartilage and/or skin, fold and shape the cartilage using permanent stitches, or graft cartilage. Once this is complete, he'll close the surgical incision with stitches, and you'll be done.
