What is a Brow Lift / Forehead Lift?
Refresh, Rejuvenate, & Reposition Drooping Eyebrows & Eyelids
We base much of our initial impression of how we feel about one another on what we see in the eyes. A furrowed brow is a natural consequence of aging – over time, brows crease, and droop inward and downward. Unfortunately, this makes us look tired, sad, or angry. Also known as a forehead lift, a brow lift restores a beautiful shape and position to the brows, corrects hooding of the upper eyelids, and smooths wrinkles in the upper face. Transfollicular brow lifts can even correct a receding hairline. Brow lifts restore attractiveness and vitality equally well in both women and men.
Our patients often combine brow lifts and eyelid rejuvenation (blepharoplasty) with laser skin resurfacing, photorejuvenation, and/or radiofrequency microneedling. The surgical procedures correct specific, deeper-set concerns with facial tissues, while the non-surgical procedures provide improvements in overall skin texture and thickness. If the above procedures are performed along with a lower facelift and neck lift, our practice offers combined pricing options for our patients. Contact us for more personalized information.
Dr. Hartman’s extraordinary technical skill and artistic eye for detail ensure that whether you choose one or multiple facial procedures, your natural appearance will be maintained without any exaggeration, fakeness, or looking “overdone.” The hallmark of our practice is natural-looking rejuvenation.
What is a Brow Lift?
Also referred to as a forehead lift, a brow lift corrects visible signs of aging that commonly develop in the brow area, including:
Horizontal forehead lines
Vertical frown lines between the eyebrows
Sagging and/or asymmetric eyebrows
BOTOX® vs Brow Lift
BOTOX® Cosmetic is an FDA-approved solution to soften the intra-eyebrow “angry 11s,” horizontal forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes. Botox® generally lasts three to four months and must be repeated to maintain results.
However, to get an actual lift and a lasting improvement of the eyebrow and eyelids, you will want to consider a brow lift. With our brow lifts, the tiny brow muscles that actually cause the frowning look are also diminished to give additional smoothing for decades of longevity.
Brow and Forehead Lift Reviews
"Dr. Hartman is great! Worth it! - Dr. Hartman is amazing! I have been going to him for over a year and I look at least 10 years younger. No one believes me when I tell them I am 50. A year ago, I had a brow lift which turned out great. I wanted it to look natural and not overdone and he achieved that look and I am so happy! I also love the results from the C02 laser under my eyes, face and décolleté and on my scars from a b..."- V. / RealSelf / Dec 11, 2016
"What an excellent experience: my facelift and brow lift make me look years younger with zero "stretched" or startled look. My jowl line is so sleek and tight -- better looking than when I was 20. Had my free facial today (first facial I ever had) and OMG it was a delight, so good I signed up for three more (buy 3 and get 10% off). This place is so good I just ponied up some more money to have multiple sites of lipo so that instead of wasting money on lip filler every 6 months, I'll have Dr. H. use the fat from the lipo, which will last for a long time. For years I'd been going to a fancy-schmanzy place in Columbus -- compared to Fine Arts Skin and Laser, that place was maybe 2 stars."- Anonymous / Facebook / Aug 28, 2018
"Absolutely the Finest Surgeon - It just did not seem possible during our initial consultation that he could do all he said he could for the price he did it at and give me his undivided attention during the procedures and after. I am still agog. I had been going to a place considered "high brow" in Columbus and the difference in treatment and care between the Columbus place and Dr. Hartman is impossible to describe. What a talented surgeon, unlike anyone I have ever known. So honest. So particular. So energetic. My results have astounded me.Updated on 6 Aug 2018:Ten weeks ago, Dr. Hartman performed a brow lift and lower face lift on me. A leap of faith and trust on my part: other than several glowing and outstanding reviews of Dr. H. on realself, I did not know if Dr. H. was any good.My trust in his talents were not misplaced -- Dr. H. is an artist for the face. He pulled a lot of my skin -- I asked to see the skin he removed from my forehead. It was a good chunk, and yet, I absolutely do not look even slightly pulled or misshapen I used to have an ugly round face -- now my cheeks and jawline are chiseled to resemble a heart-shape. It is incredible that Dr. H. pulled so much skin and yet I look just the same except 25 years younger. I look like I did when I was 35. My wrinkles, sagging jowls and lined neck are gone. All that botox and filler injected by my previous plastic surgeon -- what a complete waste of money.I've recently run into three people -- all 3 asked me the same thing: Did you get your hair cut shorter? (My hair is the same length it has always been.) Which says to me that no one thinks my face looks pulled, tugged, or yanked. Dr. Hartman's work is so natural that people think I simply have shorter hair. Not only that, Dr. H. tells the truth, even when the truth costs him money. Dr. H. is always available by cell phone or email. Dr. H. is one of the smartest people I have ever known (I have a juris doctorate and knows lots of very smart people, and Dr. H. is one of the smartest)."- S. / RealSelf / Sep 25, 2018
"WHAT TO DO WITH HANGING FAT In 2020, my Bill lost 60 pounds. He was left with a flap of fat drooping over his belt. Exercise had no effect -- the extra skin continued to hang. Bill's forehead lines had grown deep. Looking for the perfect 17th anniversary gift for him, I surprised Bill with a Dr. Hartman consultation. The following week, Dr. Hartman performed a major tummy tuck with beaucoup liposuction on Bill, all done awake. Bill walked out after his tummy tuck procedure: his hanging flap of fat was gone and his abdomen was firm. On that same day, and also while awake, Dr. Hartman lifted Bill's brow, completely obliterating Bill's decades-worth of forehead wrinkles. Dr. Hartman performed these procedures with ease and skill. Despite that Dr. Hartman removed a ginormous chuck of belly fat, Bill had no pain during the surgeries and no pain at home. Bill looks 20 years younger. No one can tell he's had surgery. Friends peer closely at Bill, searching for that which is different about him: new haircut, hipper glasses? I can see them thinking: what is it? Bill looks fabulously youthful but no one can tell why. Dr. Hartman's surgery has greatly increased Bill's self-confidence and body image. Dr. Hartman and his staff made Bill's tummy tuck and brow lift surgery an easy and affordable procedure."- J.M. / Google / Jul 19, 2021

Why Do Brows Flatten & Sag as We Age?
While you should only make a final decision about which treatments to receive after consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon, there are tell-tale signs that indicate if a brow lift may be right for you.
A youthful and aesthetically balanced eyebrow typically possesses an arch that is raised near the center and a tail that tapers slightly downward. Keep in mind that a sharper arch isn’t necessarily better or worse than a subtler or more rounded one. In men, the handsome brow is more horizontal and tends to be lower.
As we age, the brows descend, and the arch starts to flatten. It is common for sagging brows to push the upper eyelids to the hood, creating a heavy and redundant appearance that can even obstruct vision.
A brow lift will lighten the heaviness on the lids to create a more open, alert, and refreshed appearance of the eyes. The brows will be given a more youthful position with an arch that better matches the natural characteristics it once had.
Skin and muscle laxity is not the only culprit behind droopy, flattened brows – key fat pads that provide a supportive framework can diminish and droop over time. If Dr. Hartman determines this is the case, he may also include fat transfers and fat repositioning during a brow lift to further restore a natural, youthful appearance.
Recovering from a Brow Lift
The most important consideration for recovery time tends to be the possibility of bruising. Some patients only bruise minimally, and return to their regular activities in three to five days, while others may have more noticeable bruising and elect to take one to two weeks off.
We encourage walks and light activity starting the next day. You should try to avoid strenuous activity for about three weeks. Discomfort after the procedure is generally very easy to manage. While we may prescribe pain medication in some cases, we typically recommend over-the-counter products such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or ibuprofen (Motrin®).
Cold compresses can further alleviate possible discomfort, and we recommend the daily application of ointment to the incisions. Keeping your head elevated (above your heart) while resting or sleeping may reduce the possibility of bruising and swelling.
Dr. Hartman and our team will follow up with you daily for the first days after your brow lift to monitor your progress and address any concerns you may have. After surgery, you will be provided with Dr. Hartman’s mobile phone number to contact him about any post-operative concerns.
Brow lift results are long-lasting, but aging can continue over time. By maintaining a good skincare regimen after surgery, your lines and wrinkles can be effectively managed for decades.
What Can I Expect from a Brow Lift?
Dr. Hartman and our medical team will assess your facial profile, carefully listen to your concerns, and determine which techniques can best achieve your aesthetic goals. Don’t hesitate to voice all your concerns during the consult – no question is too trivial, and it is important to us that you feel confident and comfortable with the treatment choices you make.
Once a customized surgical plan is created for you, we will educate you on what you can expect, how to prepare for surgery and care for yourself after, and how much time you may want to take off from work or other routines after your procedure.
The actual measurable elevation of brows after surgery is normally between 2 to 9 mm. Brow shape will likely also be refined – its curve, arch placement, the effect on upper eyelids, and improvement of forehead skin are all important factors to be considered in treatment outcomes.
Depending on the technique employed and possible associated procedures involved, a brow lift can take between two and four hours. We perform brow lifts using local and tumescent anesthesia, allowing patients the valuable opportunity to participate in deciding on the brows’ final position during surgery. We have these patients use a mirror so they can give us feedback during the placement of the initial “keystone sutures.”
Brow lift incisions are typically hidden away slightly behind the hairline to improve the brows’ shape and height without raising the hairline itself – and to help eliminate visible scarring.
Endoscopic vs. Transfollicular Brow Lift
An endoscopic brow lift uses several small incisions in the scalp to tunnel underneath the forehead to lift the eyebrows and skin above it to a more youthful position. It involves no skin removal. A transfollicular or hairline brow lift, on the other hand, uses a single incision just behind the hairline of the scalp to lift the tissues so the resulting redundant skin is removed.
The position of the hairline is a very important consideration with a brow lift. With a “double-beveled” incision placed a quarter of an inch behind the forehead hairline, the transfollicular brow lift encourages hair growth in front of incisions to further camouflage them.
Although the endoscopic approach may have some advantages in terms of quicker recovery, it also may shift the actual hairline upwards along with the brows. If you want a stable or lowered hairline, the transfollicular brow lift may be more appropriate.
