Who is an Ideal Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
The decision to have breast augmentation surgery is personal. If you are contemplating this procedure, it is essential you do it for yourself. You should be healthy and at a normal weight with breasts that are formed and be the appropriate age to get implants. If you are unhappy with the size of your chest because they seem flat, you may benefit from this surgery. In addition, if your breasts have been affected by weight loss or pregnancy, this surgery can bring them back to life with increased shape and fullness. It is also a welcomed option if you lift weights or have an overall lack of original breast tissue.
What Are the Types of Breast Implants?
A breast implant procedure plan designed by Dr. Hartman has multiple options that allow you to get the look, size, and shape you want with your breasts.
When you are in your consultation with Dr. Hartman, the correct implant will be recommended based on your body size and shape, as well as your cosmetic goal. Implants for augmentation are made in an assortment of shapes, sizes, textures, and profiles — all of which are taken into consideration in order to attain the wanted result. Still, the most commonly used implant types are saline or silicone, both widely chosen and approved to use per the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). At Fine Arts Skin & Laser, we are proud to use Natrelle breast implants to help you achieve the specific look you desire. An important fact is that women considering implants made with saline must be 18 years old, while patients must be at least 22 years old in order to receive augmentation with silicone. Two other types of augmentations include gummy bear implants and fat grafting (known as a fat transfer). Aside from the type of augmentation chosen, there are other important factors that will need decisions.
Implant size is chosen based on the number of CCs of saline or silicone used. To pick the appropriate amount, Dr. Hartman will decipher how much native breast tissue exists and the size you wish to attain. In the operating room, it is normal for Dr. Hartman to temporarily switch out several implants to get a better idea of a suitable fit.
Implants come in either a round or teardrop shape. Both shapes are commonly used; however, the majority of our patients prefer a round implant. It often looks more natural and adds a fullness to the upper breast that a large percentage of patients want.
The implant profile references the projection. Meaning that this is what you see from the side angle. The most common projections include low, intermediate, high, or extra high.
These options may be overwhelming, but selecting the appropriate implant is easy once the patient's desires are discussed during the consultation. These considerations, combined with the experience of Dr. Hartman, help to ensure the anticipated outcome is achieved.
How is Breast Augmentation Performed?
The exact methods used will determine on whether the patient chooses a fat transfer or Natrelle breast implants. In the case of a fat transfer, Dr. Hartman harvests fat cells from donor areas where the fat is less than desirable: typically the tummy “muffin top” area, inner- or outer-thigh areas, outer hip “love handles” area, upper back “bra fat” area, or even “double chin” area. When collecting fat for transfer, Dr. Hartman exclusively uses Alma BeautiFill, a revolutionary laser technology that can seamlessly extract and transfer unwanted pockets of fat. Next, Dr. Hartman refines the fat cells in a process that washes and filters the fat cells to concentrate the healthy fat cells. From here, the fat cells are carefully introduced into the breasts so that the added volume appears natural and the breasts remain proportionate with each other and the rest of the body. Our patients are very comfortably awake for this procedure and participate in exactly “where” the fat is placed and “how much” is placed to give the ultimate in customized, natural breast rejuvenation. Because these are a patient’s own living cells, risks and complications associated with implant-based breast augmentation, such as capsular contracture and rupture, are avoided. Viable cells will settle into their new location with no need for the patient to worry about allergies or rejection.
In the case of breast implant surgery, the incision type and implant location are considerations that will need to be made ahead of surgery. During the procedure, an incision is created, and then the appropriate Natrelle breast implant will be slipped into its position. There are a couple of techniques that may be used for implant placement. These are either under the pectoral muscle or submammary/subglandular placement (over the pec muscle). Where to place the breast implant depends on numerous factors, including the overall type and size of the implant, along with the opinion of Dr. Hartman. Regardless of the incision, scarring is often hidden within the natural creases and lines of the body. Placement and location are based upon your implant size, activity level, and body type.
What Can Breast Augmentation Do?
Adding volume into the breasts makes them not only larger but also improves their shape. It is imperative that women seeking breast augmentation choose a plastic surgeon who has extensive experience with the necessary techniques, as well as an eye for aesthetic details that will maintain a natural, proportional look in the breasts. Dr. Hartman is a double board-certified plastic surgeon who frequently performs fat reduction and enhancement procedures, giving him particular insight into the process.
Dr. Hartman calls his breast augmentation procedures “breast rejuvenation” because they do more than merely provide a boost in size. For example, in the case of fat transfer, transporting healthy, living fat cells to make the breasts rounder and fuller also provides a lifting effect, making the breasts appear perkier in addition to larger. That said, patients looking to correct more significant sagging should consider a minimally invasive surgical breast lift, which is also available at Fine Arts Skin & Laser. This focused procedure specifically addresses the excess skin and tissue that can cause breasts to point downward and can be performed in addition to the fat transfer.
What Can I Expect After Breast Augmentation?
When it comes to fat transfer, the recovery process is extremely minimal. Some patients may experience a little bit of post-treatment swelling or tenderness, which can be seen for a short period or longer, depending on the amount of fat transferred and the number of treated areas. However, these mild side effects usually do not prevent patients from resuming their daily routine within 24 hours should they desire to do so.
For patients who choose to undergo Natrelle breast implant surgery, it will be performed as an outpatient surgery with the patient under general anesthesia. After completing the incision, the silicone or saline implant will be inserted through the incision opening and deposited into a pocket created for it and then fitted into its correct position. Following the placement of the implant, the incision is carefully secured with sutures or surgical adhesives. All patients will be taken into a recovery area and observed before being released.
Afterward, patients will be instructed to continue wearing a compression garment to assist with swelling. Within a few days, the bruising and swelling will begin to dissipate, and the breasts will start to look and feel normal as they get used to their new position. Most patients can return to everyday activities within the first week; however, physical exertion such as exercise should be delayed for about a couple of months. This surgery produces beautiful outcomes that look and feel normal. This treatment can often be life-changing for many women, offering them the chance to feel more self-assured.
